The Hukilau 2017

All the music and all the cocktails!
Starting at 8:00PM our entertainment kicks off with an amazing collection of exotica and surf music. Five different bands and burlesque with the reknowned and lovely Angie Pontani.

Tiki Cocktails! – Eight different tiki bars from across the United States have joined our rum sponsors and created some special cocktails just for this party. Your pass includes one cocktail from each of these special bars (NOTE: Drink Responsibly. Cocktails are not dixie cup sized, but are less than a full-sized drink. Eight is plenty! Drinking less is OK too!)

If you really want to see as much of The Hukilau as you can, this is a great way to check it all out.

In addition to the Friday Night High Tide Party, you get access to the Tiki Treasures Bazaar on Saturday (10:00AM to 4:00PM) including rum samples from our sponsors.

You are also eligible for passholder pricing on our special symposiums on Saturday, including a rare rum tasting and hands-on cocktail making classes. Okole Maluna!

In addition, Surf’s Up passholders can join us at the finale party at The Mai-Kai (separate dinner reservation required). Dinner and a Polynesian floor show will be followed by multiple performances by live bands. The first show is sold out, and the second is going fast.

If you have an Aloha, Luau, Kahuna, or South Seas pass you admission to the party is included. For $25 you can purchase the drink pass which gets you a cocktail at each of our pop-up/sponsor bars. A full cash bar will also be on-site.

Mai-Kai author and historian Tim “Swanky” Glazner has assembled an amazing group of current and former Mai-Kai employees for this symposium. Tim will lead us in a panel discussion as we hear the real history from the people who lived it. Tim’s amazing book on the Mai-Kai comes to life in this once in a lifetime chance to hear some of the greatest stories from the 60 years of the Mai-Kai.

We never seem to get tired of drinking rum, and you’ll appreciate it even more after Ian’s presentation. A 5-time nominee for brand ambassador of the year, Ian’s depth of knowledge is unmatched. And just to make sure everyone is paying attention, The Hukilau bar crew will be serving up cocktails during “history” class.

Don’t get shipwrecked on a remote tropical island without first knowing how to make your own snazzy palm frond hat. Tom Fowner, artist and carver, will show you how to be the envy of your fellow castaways with a stylish and practical hat. You can be sporting your own hat later at the Rum Island Pool Party!

Black Velvets In Paradise - Of course black velvet paintings are more than just Elvis and the Virgin Mary. Join us as Ron Ferrell takes us through a visual history of painting Polynesia on black velvet, and its’ introduction in to Tiki bars. In addition to the early styles of black velvet paintings, Ron will highlight contemporary artists like Al Evans and Woody Miller. There will also be a special surprise from this year’s Hukilau featured artist Tiki Tony.

Hands On Tiki Cocktail Workshop

When it comes to tiki cocktails, what’s inside the glass or mug is often only half of the experience of a drink. In this class, bartenders from Hidden Harbor in Pittsburgh will teach you the ins and outs of tiki garnish and presentation, from the elegant to the over-the-top, and from the classic to the modern, including a few techniques from the bar’s bag of molecular mixology tricks. We’ll give you the know-how to make and serve fun and photograph-worthy tiki drinks for yourself and your guests. And for good measure, we’ll be making and sampling some very tasty tiki drinks along the way

Each participant receives a bartender tool kit including a commemorative shaker, muddler, strainer, and more.
A proper rum blend is the key to a balanced tiki cocktail. Julian and Kevin will present the fundamentals for blending base spirits for cocktails and discuss the essential rum styles that should be in your home tiki bar. Demonstration will include tasting a guided rum tasting as well as a Trader Vic Style Mai Tai and our take on the Jet Pilot.

Everything sounds better with an Italian accent – and Daniele is no exception. Daniele is going to teach you the basics of orgeat and ginger syrups, and the proper way to open a coconut and pineapple properly. From there you’ll be making a few of his favorite cocktails – Vicious Virgin #2, the Caribe Welcome, and the Pina Paradise.

The root of most all faux tropical drinks can be traced back to the Daiquiri. Scotty will take us south of the border (Cuba, not Mexico) to learn about the origin of the drink, how it plays a role in our favorite Tiki libations. After we do a little shaking and making, Scotty is going to teach us how to do the “Cuban Roll” which he says will change the way you drink forever!
